Lotto Max is one of three national lotteries in Canada. The lottery was launched in 2009 and is operated by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation (ILC). The lottery corporation is jointly owned by five provincial lottery commissions and revenue generated from the national lottery is paid out proportionately to the different regions depending on ticket sales.
The national lottery replaced Lotto Super 7. Lotto Max is a 7/50 game that is drawn twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays.
CA$ 5 buys you three sets of numbers. Each board includes two additional Quick Picks which is where the lottery terminal randomly generates lucky numbers for you. Players pick 7 numbers from a pool of 1 to 50 numbers. To win Lotto Max, players must match 7 out of the 7 draw numbers.
The Lotto Max jackpot starts at CA$ 10 million and if there is no lucky winner in a draw, the jackpot rolls over. The Canada Lotto Max jackpot is capped at CA$70 million. After the jackpot hits CA$ 50 million, additional drawings are held in an auxiliary account to fund the MaxMillions prizes. Each MaxMillions prize is CA$ 1 million each.
Other Lotto Max games
Other regions in Canada run similar versions to the Canada Lotto Max. Loto-Québec and Western Canada Lottery Corporation local versions of Lotto Max, including Québec Max and Western Max. The draws for these two lotteries are held on the same nights as Lotto Max which is every Tuesday and Friday.
The difference between Lotto Max and Québec Max and Western Max is the jackpot is fixed at CA$ 2 million. The latter two lotteries included additional drawings from a pool of 7 numbers for Québec and a pool of 10 for Western Canada for an extra CA$ 1 million draw per region.
Players can choose between playing Lotto Max and the regional games or both by indicating their choice on their betslip.
Loto-Québec is different to Lotto Max and Western Max because it is the only region out of all 5 regions that allows players to manually select all 3 sets on a board for CA$ 5. The other two regional games give players the option of selecting one set manually but the 2nd and 3rd set are generated randomly by the lottery terminal in the form of QuickPick.
Each region offers add-on games for an extra CA$ 1 for each game. There are different names for the add-on games such as Tag, Encore or Extra depending on the region. How the add-on games work is the terminal adds a 6- or 7-digit number to the ticket to win a top cash prize that ranges from CA$ 250 000 in Western Canada to CA$ 1 million in Ontario and Québec.

CA$ 55 million was won in 2015 by a group of 20 employees who bought their lucky winning ticket from a store in Québec. It was the first jackpot won after the lottery rules changed that allowed the main Lotto Max jackpot to exceed CA$ 50 million.
At the time, this big lotto win was the second-largest payout in Canada’s lottery history. It fell a few million short of the CA$ 63 million payout in 2013 on Lotto 6/49.
In June 2019, Lotto Max broke Lotto 6/49’s record when it paid out CA$ 60 million to a single ticket holder in Montreal.
Canada waited with bated breath at the start of 2020 as the Lotto Max jackpot reached CA$ 70 million for the first time ever. There’s a lucky winner out there in Canada whose life will change forever if his or her 7 lucky numbers match the drawn numbers in the next draw.

Two new lower-tier prize divisions have been added. To win these lower prizes, players must match 5 of the 7 drawn numbers plus the Bonus number and/or 4 of the 7 drawn numbers plus the Bonus number. This change increased the prize divisions from 7 to 9.

Why Lotto Max draw times are different
When you mark the Quick Pick box on your betslip (or tell the cashier to select it), the lottery terminal automatically generates 6 random numbers for you for the draw.
The Quick Pick random number generator for a lottery draw game has no built-in memory. Once a set of numbers is picked for one play, the terminal resets itself to generate a fresh batch of completely random number for the next play.
Players generally opt to use Quick Pick because it saves them the bother of coming up with their own set of unique numbers.
With Lotto Max, you get three sets on a board for one play. The first set can be picked manually and the second and third set are selected by the terminal machine as if it’s a Quick Pick. You can opt to use Quick Pick to choose your 7 lucky numbers in the first set.
The Lotto Max jackpot was previously capped at CA$ 50 million but this limit was increased and the jackpot can roll over to a maximum of CA$ 70 million. The starting jackpot is CA$ 10 million and rolls over until there is a winner or the jackpot reaches CA$ 50 million.
The 7/7 jackpot cap is applied when the jackpot reaches this limit. Each CA$ 1 million that the jackpot rolls over the cap of CA$ 50 million is drawn as a separate CA$ 1 million payout known as MaxMillions prizes.
For each MaxMillions draw, 7 numbers are drawn from a pool of 1 to 50 numbers. To win a MaxMillions prize, a player must match all 7 lucky drawn numbers. If there is more than one winner, the MaxMillions cash prize is shared among the lucky winners.

When the Lotto Max jackpot reaches CA$ 50 million, additional drawings are held back and allocated for MaxMillions prizes which are CA$ 1 million each. And this is why the lottery is called Lotto Max because the game offers maximum chances to win big cash prizes with the MaxMillion prizes.
What are MaxMillions prizes?
The minimum advertised jackpot for Lotto Max is CA$ 10 million. This is the starting jackpot. The jackpot rolls over to the next draw if there is no jackpot winner but only up to CA$ 50 million. Thereafter, additional drawings are held for secondary MaxMillions prizes, each worth CA$ 1 million.
If a MaxMillions prize is not won, the CA$ 1 million is rolled over to the next draw or to the next series of draws. If some lucky player wins the Lotto Max jackpot but the MaxMillions prizes have not been won by anyone, the prize money is used to top up the starting jackpot.
MaxMillions cash prizes are paid out in a lump sum and are not taxed.

Start a lottery pool in the office or with family and friends so you can pool your money. This allows you to purchase more tickets more often and increases your chance of winning great cash prizes betting on the USA Powerball.
Join a lottery syndicate where tickets are bought in bulk. A syndicate has increased buying power and players participate in more draws more often when in a syndicate. It’s estimated that one in every 4 lottery jackpots is won in the UK by a lottery syndicate.
When Lotto Max was launched in 2009, it attracted higher revenue in its first 10 months of operation than Super 7 did in its best year of sales. The reason why Lotto Max is so popular is largely due to the size of its total prize pools. These often get as big as the major lotteries in the United States.
There is also a perception that the MaxMillions prizes has increased players chance of winning a big payout.
Other changes have been implemented which adds to the appeal of Lotto Max. This includes adding an extra draw on Tuesday, increasing the jackpot cap, increasing the number field and adding two additional prize divisions.
Here are 10 common lottery myths:
Myth 1: You stand a better chance of winning the lottery if you use Quick Pick
The lottery system draws numbers using a random algorithm and numbers picked manually or using Quick Pick have an equal chance of being drawn. There is no proof that Quick Pick creates more winners. Quick Pick is convenient and saves you from having to come up with your own numbers all the time.
Myth 2: Every number combination has the same probability
The thinking is that when you combine numbers, the probability changes and the probability of your number combination depends on its structure. Some combinations will appear more often than others and some combinations are not likely to appear.
Myth 3: You can pick winning numbers by studying past lottery results
The lottery does not work on individual numbers. You have to pick 5 or 6 correct numbers to win a cash prize. The thinking is if you look at combination patterns rather than individual numbers and you use mathematics with binomial coefficients and a detailed probability analysis, it is possible to determine winning number combinations.
Myth 4: You cannot predict winning numbers on a lottery game
The thinking is that you can tell how a pattern performs in a given number of draws by multiplying probability by the number of draws to get the estimation.
Myth 5: Picking hot numbers gives you a better chance of winning
This is where players pick the most common numbers that have occurred in the past 100 draws. According to the probability theory, every number has an equal chance of being drawn but if a single number appears at a higher frequency, then the other numbers will occur more or less in the same frequency over a large number of trials.
Myth 6: The best time to play the lottery is when the jackpot is big
Actually, this is the ‘worst time’ to play the lottery because big jackpots attract substantially more lottery players. There’s a good chance that if you win a big payout on a lottery with a big jackpot, you will have to share it with other lucky winning players.
Myth 7: Number 13 is an unlucky number
This is an ‘old-wives’ tale because there are no unlucky or unlucky numbers. All numbers have the same theoretical probability of being drawn.
Myth 8: Prime numbers are drawn more often
Again, the argument is to look at number combinations rather than individual numbers. What is known is that playing all-odd numbers or all-even numbers reduces your chance of winning a lottery payout because numbers like this in a combination rarely occur.
Myth 9: It’s not a good idea to use dates for special occasions
Lottery experts tell you not to use numbers that are dates for birthdays, anniversaries or your children’s ages because they are poor numbers. It’s not because they’re poor numbers but because they’re likely to be used by many other people. This means that a jackpot payout will be shared with many players.
Myth 10: Select numbers using a visual pattern
The only reason you would pick numbers on a board using a pattern such as a zig-zag or up-down-sideways pattern is if you’ve run out of inspiration to manually pick your own numbers. In this case, use the QuickPick option and the machine will randomly generate numbers for you.
The odds of winning the Lotto Max jackpot is over 1 in 33 million per CA$ 5 play.

Canada Lotto Max is not a scam and is a legal lottery offered by legitimate lottery organisations in the participating countries in the Caribbean and Paraguay. These lottery enterprises are regulated by federal state laws and you can play Canada Lotto Max with the confidence that the big jackpot payout and cash winnings from the prize tiers are guaranteed.
On a general note, don’t be taken by any of lottery scam that promises you unexpected prize money for a competition or lottery that you have never entered.

If you receive a message or phone call telling you that you’ve won a prize, it is a scam. Never give out your personal and identity details if requested and never pay a fee to receive a so-called cash prize.
How lottery scams work
Someone contacts you either by email, text message or phone to say you have won a lot of money on a competition using your name and details from something like a promotion or research survey. You are requested to pay a fee to claim your prize which is to cover the cost of transferring the money to your account.
You’re also asked to provide your banking details where the money should be paid out. The email or text is always ‘urgent’ and you’re told to respond quickly or risk losing out on the prize money.
The scammers make money from the ‘fee’ you pay them or they use your banking details to take wipe out your bank account.
People do fall for these lottery scams because the scammers are masters at what they do. They usually have obtained your personal information which makes it sound like a legitimate deal. Sometimes, the scammers even send you money as ‘part of your winnings’. This cheque will bounce but often only after you have given them more information and money they ask for.
Warning signs of a lottery scam
You receive correspondence via email, text or phone to say you’ve won a guaranteed prize in a lottery or competition but you never bought a ticket or entered the competition.
The scammer claims you are a winner using personal email and social media information that makes it look genuine.
To claim your prize, the scammers ask you to buy pay a fee or tax on the prize money.
You’re asked to provide personal details such as your ID and contact details such as a postal address as well as banking details for the electronic transfer.
What to do if you are approached by a lottery scammer
Ignore anything that is suspicious. Do not even reply to a message saying you’ve won a large cash prize or even something like a fancy holiday, electronic goods or gifts.
Never pay a fee to win a prize. Ithuba National Lottery does not charge a fee for any prize-winning transaction and the only way they can access your banking details is from the authorised Prize Claim Form that you are required to complete.
Don’t trust anyone who asks you to send them money or give your credit card, banking details or copies of personal information in exchange for prize money.
